7 Red Flags to Watch for When Comparing Solar Quotes

Shopping for solar? Not all quotes are created equal. While most companies highlight savings and efficiency, it’s important to read between the lines. Here are 7 red flags to watch for before signing any solar agreement:
1. Vague or Missing Equipment Details
If the quote doesn’t clearly list the make, model, and warranty of your panels, inverters, and other hardware — be cautious. Reputable companies are transparent about what they’re installing.
2. Unrealistically Low Pricing
If a price seems too good to be true, it probably is. Cheap quotes often mean low-quality materials, inexperienced labor, or surprise charges later. Solar is a long-term investment — not a race to the bottom.
3. No Mention of Permits or Inspections
All legal solar installations in New Jersey require permitting and inspection. If your installer glosses over this or says it's "not needed," walk away.
4. Confusing or Hidden Financing Terms
Make sure any solar loan, lease, or PPA includes clear terms: interest rate, payment schedule, escalator clauses, and buyout options. If it’s hard to understand, it’s a red flag. (SLM Solar offers a Welcome Call to all of our clients, ensuring the full scope of your contract is explained clearly)
5. Pressure to Sign Immediately
Any contractor who pressures you to sign the same day or says a deal will “expire tonight” is prioritizing their commission — not your confidence. Trustworthy companies give you time to think.
6. No Site Visit Before Installation
A legitimate solar design requires evaluating your roof, electrical system, and shading. If a company gives you a quote based on a satellite image alone, that system may not be optimized — or even permitted. Make sure your contractor performs an in depth site assessment prior to installation. Aging roofs and illegal electrical panels are common in New Jersey and can add thousands to your quote or result in a subpar installation.
7. Lack of Licensing and Insurance
Always verify that the company is properly licensed, bonded, and insured. In New Jersey, this protects both your home and your wallet.
At SLM Solar, we offer clear, complete proposals, zero-pressure consultations, and expert installation backed by over 30 years of combined experience.
